Öland

Öland is a long, narrow island known for its ancient forts, ruins, windmills and lighthouses, with a southern tip that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Öland is a long, narrow island that boasts many ruins, fortifications and windmills. Alongside Ismantorp and Eketorp, Gråborg, with a diameter of 200 m, is the largest of the island’s ancient forts and offers an incredible view. Nearby Eketorp has been partly reconstructed as a museum and shows what a fortified medieval village looked like. Also impressive is the ruin of Borgholm Castle, which burned down in 1806 and has been a ruin ever since.

The lighthouses at the island’s southern and northern tips are also very well known. The southern tip and the alvar landscape are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Öland can be reached from Kalmar via a bridge around 6 kilometres long, one of the longest bridges in Europe. Öland is also a very popular place to celebrate Midsummer.
