From Denmark to Sweden: Øresund Bridge, Ferry and Train

From Denmark to Sweden you can take the Øresund Bridge, the Helsingør–Helsingborg ferry or the train. How the toll works, what tickets cost and which route suits whom.

·

There are three ways to get from Denmark to Sweden: by car over the Øresund Bridge, by ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg, or by train from Copenhagen to Malmö. Which one suits you best depends on your destination, your vehicle and your budget. Updated: October 2026.

By car over the Øresund Bridge

The Øresund Link connects Copenhagen with Malmö. It consists of the bridge, the artificial island of Peberholm and the Drogden Tunnel under the water. A toll is charged for the crossing, collected by the operator Øresundsbron.

Ticket types

  • Online ticket: Bought in advance, valid for 30 days, and it saves you stopping at the toll station. According to the operator, you get 10 per cent off the online price if you sign up for the newsletter.
  • Toll station: The standard price applies here. You can pay by card or in cash, but cash only in Swedish or Danish kronor, not in euros.
  • ØresundGO: An ongoing discount agreement with an annual fee. The operator quotes 60 per cent off every crossing. It only pays off if you use the bridge several times a year.

What does it cost?

For a car up to 6 metres, a single crossing in autumn 2026 costs roughly 60 to 70 euros according to the operator’s price list, depending on the ticket. Motorhomes between 6 and 10 metres and cars with a trailer up to 15 metres pay about twice as much. Prices are calculated in kronor, change from time to time and may differ slightly between pages. Check the current amount before you travel on the Øresundsbron price page.

By ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg

The shortest sea route runs from Helsingør in North Zealand to Helsingborg in Skåne. The crossing takes only about 20 minutes, and ferries run regularly. It is a good alternative if your destination is on the west coast or further north, because it saves the detour via Malmö. The ferry operator can give you current timetables and prices.

By train from Copenhagen to Malmö

If you travel without a car, the train over the bridge is the most convenient option. The journey from central Copenhagen to Malmö takes around 40 minutes. From Malmö, Swedish long-distance trains continue towards Gothenburg and Stockholm. Journey times are guidelines and depend on the train.

Which route suits when?

  • Heading for southern Sweden or Stockholm, by car: the Øresund Bridge; an online ticket saves time and money.
  • Heading for the west coast, Gothenburg or the north, by car: the Helsingør–Helsingborg ferry can shorten the journey.
  • Without a car: the train, then onwards from Malmö by long-distance train or bus.

Don’t forget your ID

There are normally no permanent checks between Denmark and Sweden. However, Sweden can introduce border controls temporarily. So take your ID card or passport with you. The current situation is published on the Swedish Police website.
