Sweden sends Patriot air defence to Poland to protect NATO hub for Ukraine aid

Sweden plans to deploy an air defence unit with the Patriot system to Poland from December. Around 100 soldiers are to protect the NATO logistics hub near Rzeszów, through which aid to Ukraine is channelled.

Sweden plans to deploy an air defence unit with the Patriot system to Poland from December. The government in Stockholm announced this on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The unit is to protect NATO’s logistics hub in south-eastern Poland, through which a large share of military and civilian support for Ukraine is handled.

What the government has announced

According to the Swedish government, the plan is for Sweden to contribute an air defence unit to the NATO mission in Poland from December. The Patriot air defence system will be used, and the unit will be commanded by NATO’s Allied Air Command. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson presented the plan at a press conference. According to the TT news agency, the aim is to protect the airport near Rzeszów, through which munitions and military equipment, among other things, are transported towards Ukraine.

The government’s press release does not give a troop strength. Swedish and international media consistently report around 100 soldiers. According to a TV4 report, most of them come from the air defence regiment in Halmstad. According to The Local, citing the AFP news agency, the Swedish contingent is due to arrive in early December and take over the task from the Netherlands.

Background: Rzeszów as a bottleneck for Ukraine aid

The airport near Rzeszów lies not far from the Ukrainian border and has been regarded as the most important transit point for Western deliveries since Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022. Protection of the site is taken on by NATO states in rotation.

It is not Sweden’s first contribution at this location: the country is already taking part in NATO’s air defence over Poland with fighter jets. According to Kristersson, both the Gripen deployment and the Patriot deployment serve the same purpose, namely protecting the logistics hub. Sending a ground-based air defence unit, however, is new.

How Stockholm justifies the deployment

The government points to the security situation in Europe. In the press release, Defence Minister Pål Jonson cites repeated violations of allies’ airspace and Russian attempts to undermine support for Ukraine. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stressed that the Swedish contribution is intended to ensure that military and civilian aid continues to reach Ukraine.

Why this matters

The deployment shows how much Swedish security policy has changed. The country relied on military non-alignment for around two centuries and has only been a member of NATO since March 2024. The road there was long; we reported on the dispute with Turkey at the time in our article Sweden’s path to NATO. Sweden now provides its own units for alliance tasks outside its own territory.

Patriot is the most capable air defence system in the Swedish Armed Forces. With the deployment, the country is temporarily taking on a task previously carried out by other allies. How long the mission is to last and what it will cost is not clear from the information available. How the government and the Riksdag work together in Sweden is explained in our overview of Sweden’s political system.
